Exclamation Internet Legends and Hoaxes

If you're reading this post, then it's highly likely that your email inbox has had email forwards dumped into it on a regular basis. Some of us have received some shocking forwards and immediately forwarded them to others only to find out by a return email (which can be anything from a kindly "heads up" to annoyed and snippy) that the letter is not true, or is a mixture of some truth and a lot of false information. And you cannot always be certain that an email is true even if someone you believe to be reliable has sent it. You need to check it out for yourself. If you don't have time, don't send it on.

Forwarding false information, phony virus alerts, and chain letters takes up precious time and can very well be a security risk in some cases, or be a harvesting ground for email addresses for internet spammers--at best it clogs up inboxes with junk.

Please know that it is possible to spot these legendary spoofs and hoaxes.

Here is some advice from one of the web sites that tracks the internet legends and hoaxes:

How To Spot an Email Hoax

Here are some web sites dedicated to squashing the propagation of internet propaganda. It's a good idea to go to these sites, and bookmark them on your own computer so that you can quickly verify the truth of a particular bit of information--and squash it before it goes anywhere else. Type the subject line, or a phrase from the email into a search engine box to find out what you need to know. has five different search engines you can use. can help you spot phony virus alerts
