Default Should religion determine one's place in society or civil government?

Yesterday I heard 2012 presidential hopeful Herman Cain that he would not appoint a Moslem to his cabinet. Today Fox News on line says France is debating the role of Moslems in society. Is it appropriate to determine someone's role in society by their religion or to use a religious basis for choosing people to serve in government? Is the latter even constitutional? I can understand some of the concerns but it still seems wrong to me. I know if it were said I would never appoint a Christian l would be very disturbed. Is there a difference?

Please as you reply to this consider your wording. Almost any viewpoint can be expressed courteously with some effort. We will not all agree but we can disagree without being disagreeable.

Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. Matthew 25:40 & 45
